10 mistakes when designing your own interior

Not everyone can afford to hire an interior designer. If you have to do it yourself, homeowners need to avoid 10 common mistakes.

Do not dare to mix different styles

The fact that interior design follows a particular style is certainly not a reason to exclude other styles. For example, a traditional design can still match modern elements, or rustic details.

However, if you are worried that mixing different design styles can affect the coherence in the house, even turning it all into a mess, experts recommend at least You should clearly define the specific color scheme that you will use to decorate.

Using tables and chairs in sets

Designers think that using furniture “in sets” is now an outdated trend. You can make a difference by combining items of different styles, for example a modern sofa can be combined with a vintage armchair, or a wooden table with metal chairs…

“Crazy” minimalist design

Minimalist style is no longer an interior design trend. Now, “visual overload” is the hottest trend, encouraging you to use a combination of different elements to create a harmonious, eye-catching product. Elements like metal, wood, works of art, small pieces of furniture or whatever you like… can be used. Monochromatic colors and neutral interiors are no longer exciting, your designs should be more expressive instead.

Put the sofa close to the wall

The old design rules said that chairs should be placed close to the wall to save space and create more space. However, that opinion has now changed, even many experts say that it only makes your interior space look boring. A better option is to create different themed areas, with separate decor corners. As a result, your home space will be more personal and unique.

Color combination “fight” chatter

Designers always emphasize on home interior decoration based on a certain color palette. This applies to all elements in that space, including curtains, furniture, beds, shelves… not just the walls. Bright colors don’t go well with pastel colors, so you should only choose one of the two. Of course, this does not mean that you should choose a safe and boring solution, because different colors when combined properly can have a good effect. But be aware that is only if you have the correct color combination.

Don’t measure the space before buying

This is actually a common design mistake that a lot of people make. To avoid overcrowding or stuffy furniture, it’s best to measure all dimensions in relation to the room before buying furniture. Experts remind you to always leave a passage of about 91 cm between pieces of furniture.

Use room with default function

Remember that you don’t have to follow the archetypal rule when using a room, just because it was originally “identified” as such. Don’t assume the dining room is just a place to eat. You can increase the use of the room by yourself, for example using the dining room as a mini library, or turning the living room into a miniature workplace, for example.

Design only one light source

Lamp is an extremely important component of any interior design, as it functions both as a source of light and as a decoration. Usually, a main light source overhead will not be enough for the entire room, as it makes everything look dim, dark. Instead, using different types of lights will be very useful for specific spaces, such as table lamps, or reflectors…

Improper layout

Disjointed furniture arrangement and creating small openings inadvertently make it difficult to use wall space for anything, even making your room less functional. Experts recommend placing the chairs closer together, making the space look cozier and more compact.

Design without a personal aesthetic

When it comes to home decor, most of us look for inspiration from designers’ websites, while what we need to do is look at our own desires. To get the perfect design that meets your own desires, let your personality guide you. You can also rely on professional designers for more advice, but most importantly, know what you like.
